UK to USA Financial Aid & Loan Options - Masters in HCI
2023.05.30 19:47 CallumBooms91 UK to USA Financial Aid & Loan Options - Masters in HCI
I’m completing my university apprenticeship with a bachelors in digital visual design next year and I’m predicted a first class honours.
In my university apprenticeship, I worked four days a week at an agency doing UI/UX and one day a week completing my bachelors.
I want to study a masters in the US doing HCI (Human Computer Interaction), it’s classed as a STEM degree. I found a good course from Washington University.
I was wondering what scholarships and financial aid would be available and what the best route to take out a loan would be?

2023.05.30 19:46 lovinglysubtle05 born and raised in Honolulu, but not well-off at all
My family has always been poor, at least for the past 3 generations. My grandma and her four siblings, my dad and his 8 siblings, all of my first cousins and most of their kids, and I were raised in the same house over the past 200 years. The house is gone now, a new one stands in its place, but it has been empty for 8 years because my dad’s sister won’t allow us to move in. When he was first moved to his nursing home in 2015, his sister kicked everyone out and then tricked him into signing a quitclaim deed.
Taking a page out of my dad and his sister’s book, I decided that education would help me get out of poverty. I went to grad school because they sold me on the lie that it would be worth it. It was fine while I was in school because I got all that sweet financial aid money, but I graduated in December and the job I have is fucking ridiculous for the amount of work I have to put in. It’s ridiculous for the amount of bad behavior I have to put up with from my boss. The money is just not there. I am 32 and have less than $5000 to my name. I get paid about $3000/mo, but after rent, food, bills, and gas…I net maybe $400/mo. That is, if no emergency expenses come up. I don’t even have an emergency fund saved up. I owe about $60k in student loans that I will likely never pay back.

2023.05.30 19:24 Ok-System-5213 Thoughts on best US cities to move to?
Salaam everyone,
I'm in the process of deciding where I go to for grad school, and I wanted to come here and ask for some opinions about different regions in the US since I don't have very much experience outside Illinois. Some of the most common advice given to people in my position applying to this type of program is to heavily consider the geographic location of the school you're attending in addition to the quality of education and financial aid. Some people would say it's actually even more important, depending on the specific situation. The reason being is that the location of the school is often really heavily associated with employment prospects because it is MUCH easier to find work in the state you studied in (like 85-90% of your graduating class will stay in that state for at least the next 10 years if not the rest of their lives). It also becomes difficult to move out of the state later, though it's not impossible. I'd be open to staying where I am but I'm also open to moving and settling somewhere else, not particularly committed to either.
My question here is does anyone have thoughts as to what cities/state in the US are best for young Muslims to move to? I feel like whenever I've heard this topic being discussed before or read about it on here, it's always in the perspective of places best for families rather than young adults moving alone. People usually mention Cali, Texas, Chicago, and NY/NJ for reasons like lots of halal restaurants, mosques, large communities, and Islamic schools. I think those are all important factors and I definitely want to consider them because I'll probably be there long term, but as a young single person I have different needs/priorities right now than I would later in my life when I'm settled with a family. Right now, my Muslim friend circle isn't very large but I feel like my area is a little clique-y and if you didn't make/join a friend group in college/high school, there's an additional hurdle to get past. It seems to be easier if you're married/starting a family, but that's not a decision I want to rush into lol just because I wanna make some more friends.
Ideally, I'd like to move somewhere where it's easy for me to make a lot of Muslim friends and there's a lot of activities/things to fill my social life with. What do you guys think about the different cities/regions in terms of openness/welcoming to newcomers and difficulty in making friends as a young adult?

I'm not referring to nurses, but anyone with a CNA at most. Been doing this for about a year because it's my passion and I'm lucky to have found a decent paying gig, but most of them pay minimum wage taxed. The gov needs to financially aid families better so they can get quality workers. You can't expect a worker to show up on time, having a car, have a college degree (sometimes), and then bathe/feed/dress, etc your loved one for $12/hr. Just no.

Opening Speech:
Now some members may wonder why we should have such a bill, but the purpose is simple, by establishing these economic growth agencies we allow the economic development to be targeted and in support of local communities. With clear functions and duties outlined in section 3, the economic growth agencies will play an auxiliary role especially with analysis for improvement. The economic monitoring and reporting from such a scheme would be crucial in aiding governments and business. We believe this is a necessary part in ensuring our national and local development strategies are well informed and able to support the goals of all actors.

2023.05.30 19:00 Unlikely-Bumblebee22 Would it be a mistake to give up my scholarship in ASMPH and study in a school closer to home because of financial reasons?
Hi doctors!
I'm currently an incoming medical student. Did my undergrad in Ateneo as a full financial aid and dormitory fees scholar. Was also sustained by my DOST scholarship throughout my undergrad. Talagang pinagpursigihan ko ang nakaraang apat na taon, sunog kilay sa pag-aaral makakuha lang ng matataas na grades, para maka-secure ng scholarship ulit sa med school, alam ko kasi na we would never be able to afford med without one. Awa ng Diyos, I will be graduating with magna cum laude honors this July.
However, even with a 100% financial aid scholarship (est. Every June-May of the year nakakatanggap kami ng demand letter (minsan pag sobrang lala, cancellation letter) dahil hindi kami makabayad ng tama sa bahay. Kahit di ako yung nagbabayad noon, syempre sobrang nakakastress kasi I see how it affects my parents.
As in...alam mo yung napanood ko yung Blue Lights ceremony nila tapos naiiyak na agad ako imagining that's me?! Haha. Best decision of my life, ika nga. Yung Doktor Para Sa Bayan, it's mostly for those living in GIDA areas naman, so kahit may willingness to serve, hindi pa rin makukuha kasi di ako galing sa municipality na yun.
Sobrang excited na ako mag-aral and give back.
Would it be such a big mistake? Malaki ba yung difference ng opportunities available to you after you graduate?

2023.05.30 18:58 Glad-Scallion-7254 Possibly unique and absolutely contentious divorce filing
I've put myself in a situation where I need to immediately file for divorce. I've attempted to get free or low-cost legal aid in my area but there is a backlog in family law and it looks like I'll be on my own. I am functionally destitute I've been financially dependent on my spouse for many years. We are physically separated but not legally so. I have moved into section 8 housing and my spouse has their own place. My child and I are currently getting by with government assistance and have no income. Any job I've been able to find so far would end up leaving me with fewer resources than the assistance. My state health insurance, food stamps, utility assistance, etc is more than I have been able to find for salary.
What makes this situation unique, in my opinion, is that my spouse is my landlord. They are also the landlord to my adult daughter, my best friend, and the mother of my other child. All in separate addresses and properties. This creates an interested power dynamic and while nothing has been done so far I'm confident that once I file for divorce and request temporary spousal support, list my wants/needs concerning property, etc that my spouse will become irate and use this situation against me. I'm terrified of facing eviction, discrimination, etc regarding my housing and utilities. Additionally, all the utilities and my cell phone are currently in my spouses name. My thought is I should file the divorce and request an ex parte to prevent or deter any retaliation against me or my friends and family in regard to our housing. I don't know what I would do if all the sudden I had no utilities or phone and was facing eviction with no friends or family that could help any of us. Is this something I could get an emergency protection order to assist with? I'm not abused and my spouse isn't violent. They haven't done anything like this in the past and I have no proof that they will. All I have to base this on are comments made directly to me along the line of, "You live here because I let you", "Everything is mine and I could have you kicked out if I wanted" etc. I do not have evidence of those statements as my spouse always make sure to say things like that in person. Any help in doing this pro se or advice on how to file?

2023.05.30 18:56 Popular-Island7329 Unpopular opinion: why are most college students in developed countries lazy/always complaining about school?
I’m just looking for an honest answer because I’m genuinely confused.
When I was in undergraduate (for a degree with coursework way easier than most departments and easy grading -Sociology) I was working full-time going to school for 6 years and I never came across 1 student that actually liked school and was excited to learn through assignments. I partially understand - you need a degree to get a job so you just trudge through, but at the same time we are PAYING MONEY to be here and to take these classes and YOU CHOSE your path so you seriously aren’t going to admit to liking 1 single class or assignment? Like your choice it’s seriously that bad?? people act like it’s so terrible and stressful and horrible like they are getting tortured or some shit.
Flash forward to grad school I’m like YESS I’m finally going to be with classmates that enjoy school like me!! At this point I’m thinking “you don’t put yourself through all the papers to apply, interviews, anxiety, getting more student loans unless you enjoy school or the subject you are going to grad school for”. BOY WAS I WRONG. People are complaining about assignments, EVERY ASSIGNMENT, again like in undergrad. I almost want to say -then why the fuck are you here because I actually like what I’m learning and I’m actually going to apply it to my job and be great at it and help lots of people and you - the complainer are going to make every bodies lives miserable and be a terrible therapist when you graduate because you didn’t listen to anything in the lectures, you did every assignment the night it was due, and you don’t seem to want to be here.
It makes me so mad that people are wasting spots and filling jobs they don’t want when there are a lot of people that actually are excited to work and go to school.
When I was in the Philippines doing community work with college students, they were sleeping in tiny shacks as their homes, barely having meals (sometimes no food for a couple days), begging family members for money for school for just one semester, sleeping at their schools to get assignments done, no financial aide/ no loans available, working on assignments with no brain food, helping each other, supporting one another, excited to be taking classes, dreaming of all the opportunities they will have once they graduate. Americans are honestly so ungrateful and while life can def be difficult for us, it could be so much worse.
I just don’t get why Americans perspective on school and learning new things is so twisted, we pride ourselves with learning new hobbies all day long but when it comes to learning from professors with tons of experience it’s just like nah I’m good. Why is that? Do people really care that much about being “cool” that they won’t admit to liking school? We aren’t nerds for going to college😂 or maybe we are, but why is it bad to be a nerd??

2023.05.30 18:44 Ok-Piano-3699 Struggling with evidence to prove my independency?
Not sure if this is an appropriate subreddit to post, so I apologize in advance. Long story short, I grew up without a father and a mother who was abusive. I left her home at 14, however, no legal action pursued. She didn't fight for me, I wasn't adopted nor had a legal guardian (just an older sister), no situations in court, etc. Now being the age that I am, this is weird to me. My sister never went to court or anything or tried to get any compensation to take care of me, not sure why. It seems like my situation was handled with very little legality.
Anyhow, I am collecting documents for a dependency override, and I don't believe I have enough information. I have a notarized statement from my sister and another family member, but that's all. None from someone professional. I was a shy fourteen year old who was ashsamed of myself and my situation, I didn't want to talk to a school counselor or anyone (something I regret now). I called my financial aid office at school and told them this, seeking advice, and none of them understood. I spoke to three different people. They just think I'm struggling to find people to write statements for me, even though I keep explaining it to them over and over again that I'm really just not sure what further documents I can use to prove my case.
I was going to use a police report that I thought had been written the night I fled my mother's house, as yes, the police got involved, but upon calling the records department, apparently they never wrote one up. So I feel I don't have enough evidence of my estranged relationship from my mother. All I really have is evidence I paid my own bills even as far back as fourteen, and also a psychological evaluation where I discussed the abuse and was diagnosed with the same mental disorder as my mother. That was about three years ago, and I don't feel I know this psychologist enough to ask them to write a statement for me either. I'm not sure what to do, as I do want this to work out.
