From Theory Updated - A game of Tarot between an accused witch and a Beothuk deity in Newfoundland during John Cabot's lost expedition of 1498.

FROM is a game between an accused witch and a Beothuk demon, recreating an event during the Age of Exploration by John Cabot's lost expedition of 1498. The event ended before 1506 (Tabitha's tower’s earliest date). Other than the Vinland Vikings, Cabot is the only European to reach mainland America before then.

The Origin Event:
Cabot’s ship (The Matthew) is marooned in Newfoundland (where Cabot had visited before, and was supposed to return to in 1498). The explorers shelter in the Vinland Viking ruins remaining there (The Church lodge and Stone Circle). They land in Boyd’s Cove (where most archaeological artefacts of the Beothuk have been found).
They encounter the now tragically extinct native Beothuk people (who painted themselves in red ochres, as with the red stick figures in the cave paintings). The explorers wear Tudor clothing with ruffs, like Ellis’s mysterious painting.

Cabot or one of his men bond with a woman who was smuggled aboard and they have a son (Mirrored by Fatima's pregnancy). As things get worse, Cabot’s wife is accused of being a Witch at the explorer’s camp.
The Witch
Historically, it is undeniable that native Newfoundland Beothuk people suffered numerous atrocities at the hands of future settlers, and in similar fashion, the explorers may have attacked the Beothuk.
Starvation begins and Winter approaches, just as Fromland does in Season 2, with the food shortage and as with the trees changing in Fromland.
The witch is imprisoned in a cave (the cave with the talismans) while crows circle above. Cabot keeps her son from her.

Explorers that speak of mutiny have their tongues cut out (that, or blasphemy, another possible reason for tongue removal). The tongues are cooked in a stew (the cauldron with the tongues, Sarah cutting Toby’s tongue, Kevin’s tongue being bitten off), as the explorers turn to cannibalism. They might also be cooked worms, eaten due to starvation.

Later, the explorers finish repairing their ships, and sail away, leaving Cabot’s wife trapped alone in the cave, the explorers too superstitious to bring or kill her. They leave her the game of Tarot (the only card game to exist in 1500, an exclusively Italian game at the time, brought by Cabot). In despair, she calls out to any Gods who will listen. She is answered by the deities of the Beothuk.
The Mythos:
The long extinct Beothuk religion is only known from a fragment of text. The key aspects are worship of the Moon, the Sun, fear of a devilish Man in Black, a Spirit World and a Sea Monster, trees have souls, and birds carry the souls of the dead. Only a few hundred Beothuk words are known. The word for tree in Beothuk is “Annoouee” and some native american languages insert a K to pluralise words. “Annkoouee” means “the trees”.
The Witch makes a deal or bet with the Beothuk demon/devil, the Man in Black for the return of her son. Cabot and the other explorers become the first of Fromland’s victims. The Man in Black has a “Sea Monster” which the showrunners represent as a native Newfoundland Lion’s Mane Jellyfish which happens to be RED. (the location where the Viking ruins were found was called Jellyfish Cove).

The Game
This deal/bet between the Witch and the Beothuk gods involves a game using the Tarot cards, but one with invented rules. The Witch, the boy and the explorers are all sucked into Fromland to play. Every member of Fromily is assigned a Tarot card to represent.

The Players:
The game still requires four players, so the son is divided in two, creating a Moon version (Boy in White, two dogs on the moon Tarot card) and a Sun version.

Here the suitcases and curtains lay out the mother and her twin boys and their respective colour-coding (moon = blue, sun = yellow, witch = pink).
The twin smaller wheels, the split son, and the mother the large wheel. The flapping cloth, the tentacled representation of the Man in Black’s monster. The sculpture is an obvious clue.
Above here, we see the four players, (clue highlighted by a book called Crumbs in the same scene): the cables the tentacular demon and his monster, the scarf is the mother (with the witch stick figure and the pink coding) and the headphones the black and white sides of the boy (the sun and the moon)
The “witch” is kept apart from her son(s), (“I want to see my son!” Mr Tien, hearing voices in episode 1), and has some ulterior goal within the game to reunite her sons, as does the MiB.
The two sides, with the yellow light (sun - trapped underground?) and unlit light (moon - above, free to roam?). A white vessel remains on the table, despite blocking the shot. That is a vessel to represent the mothewitch.
The Rules:
The witch and the devil appear to take turns picking people (who are about to die: drunk driver, (Jade, Donna), or by suicide (Khatri), or from disease (Tilly)) from the real world.

This game is played on a game-board (see chequered shirts and floors everywhere, chess board references, and the squares on the cave painting).
Both Witch and Devil appear to be influencing Fromily in one direction or another. The Devil with his worms on Sarah and Boyd (see Boyd dousing his torch the same way it is pointed down on the devil’s tarot card, and the chained man represented by Martin on the same card), and the Witch with her visions on Tabitha and Jade. Boyd is being spoken to by the Man in Black in the form of Khatri, who encourages him to protect Sara, and seems pretty smug when he thinks Boyd is about to succumb to the worms (and wears a black cardigan for the first time).
While Jade sees the symbol as scary, the Witch is actually giving him clues in his quest to understand Fromland. It’s also possible that the “sun” side was keeping Martin captive (see the sun-symbol as the winch), and the Boy in White is bad and sent Boyd there to free him.
The rules of the game seem to be related to the gathering of lost items from their past that are anchoring them to this place (see Kristi’s rock, the anchors on the talismans, the wall in the church and Martin’s tattoo).
Anchors
Tabitha’s is the suitcase/dress, Jim’s is the bracelet, Victor’s is the dummy (his mother might have been a travelling entertainer, doing ventriloquism and playing violin). The Monsters have their own “anchors” (see the junk in the cave, the music box) and are attempting to steal anchors that are associated with current Fromily.
Throughout the series, we see people and items with blue, yellow and less often, pink/red. Ethan and Boyd, in particular, are almost always in yellow when they’re on walkabout. This seems to suggest that it is how Fromily react to each situation that aligns them with a colour, and in certain scenes everyone wears blue in particular. It seems if Fromily act as the explorers did, (nobody standing up for Sarah, who is the “witch” in this scene),

When fighting over food (see the scene at the diner) or turn on each other, there is often blue. When they act heroically, they tend to wear yellow. It is rare to see a resident that is not wearing one of these three colours - occasionally one will wear black.
In order to escape Fromland and end the game, Fromily must gather their tethered items and also reunite the boy in white with his sun counterpart (as demonstrated on the moon and sun converging on the exit sign).
The Way Out - reuniting the Sun and the Moon (the Square and the Circle)
The Monsters:
Everyone who arrives in Fromland must suffer as the Beothuk did. The crows are turned into Monsters to punish new arrivals, which is why they have a second-eyelid (as seen in the Kevin death scene) and seem interested in human items and their own reflection. They fly around as crows during the day, watching Fromily and learning their names.
Victor’s Timeline
Victor experiences a gap of 40ish years – (1978-2018). This gap is very confusing, as we have other dates that are quite close to one another and don’t seem to pause that long. We’ve been led to believe by Victor that someone betrayed them to the monsters, and told them all their hiding places. There are two suspects – Victor’s mother, who knew the exact night for Victor to hide somewhere new, or Christopher, who stopped smiling and was seeing the symbol.
Given the pre-existing mythology of a mother doing a deal to save her son, can we assume that Victor’s mother made her own deal - just like Sarah was trying to make for her brother? I have a feeling Victor’s mother, Victor and Christopher were kept alive by the sympathetic witch (just look at the stars). Victor seems to have seen her in person before too based on his drawings.
The witch revealed their situation and Victor’s mother went to the Devil and agreed to betray everyone if he would just let her son live a full life (just like Sarah is “making a deal”). The Boy in White kept Victor alive, as agreed, until he could fend for himself. Christopher survived thanks to the Witch and went to live in the Lighthouse - he’s the Radio Voice.
Finally, Victor’s mother’s deal has expired. The game began again, in 2018…and it’s going to end in 2022, one way or another.

Unresolved questions:
Why a ballerina? Presumably, the Devil has cards already under his control via worms, and uses them to possess people.
Why the USA? Cabot came to claim new land for England and Heny VII - perhaps a loose understanding of what this land would become assigned it as the USA. Alternatively, the “game” could have evolved later in a yet to be revealed way, one that answers why the 1950s clothing and town too.
Why 1950s themes? We can presume perhaps that the Deities that rule Fromland periodically update the town and the monsters appearances based on an unknown quantity that is yet to be revealed.
Why the Civil War soldiers? The Witch is revealing to Jade that Jim is the Hanged Man, using a flashback from a previous cycle.
What’s with the spiders? It is a natural phenomenon where spiders climb into the trees to escape floods, covering them in webs. This is a foreshadowing of an upcoming flood.
It seems that much of the above could be explained by ANOTHER town in another part of Fromland, simultaneously occurring in the 1950s. Perhaps in this place, the roles are reversed, Fromily are the monsters and the Monsters the townsfolk (like the mirrored Sun-boy and Moon-boy). You can get there by travelling deep underground, until you're upsidedown (kind of like the From opening credits). This is where the Ballerina resides, as well as most of the "anchor" items.
Side Note:
The expeditions of the Corte-Real brothers that disappeared in 1501 and 1502 respectively may also be involved, and precipitated the food shortage and violence. If they are, they would have arrived in Newfoundland together - this is represented by the two cars coming at the same time (this happened in both Victor's time, and the Matthews' time), and the two additional ships in the cave painting. Sara’s voices blame the people in the two cars for everyone dying - a hint at the origin story of the brothers’ two ships. This aligns with Beothuk mythology that states the first explorers to arrive in Newfoundland were good, and the second set bad.

2023.05.31 02:27 CrimsonDrops I scratched my face to shreds while screaming and having a full blown meltdown in public and everyone just walked by. I didn't expect anyone to notice or care anyways.

For context I am very nearsighted and without glasses or contacts I cannot see anything unless it's right in front of my face approx 6 inches or less. The screw from my glasses fell out when I was trying to tighten it. I was in the post office parking lot after dropping off a package I was shipping out. It fell and I couldn't find it so I opened the screws in the little fixer kit. One by one I dropped those or they were too thick to fit so all my hope had gone. I was getting increasingly desperate and frustrated and just started crying which led to screaming which led to a full on breakdown. Something nobody knows about me is that I have a mild form of autism and if I am pushed to my limit emotionally or by outside means. They don't happen often but when they do they are intense and it's hard to break out of it. I sort of have to snap out of it on my own. Anyways I was screaming at the top of my lungs scratching and clawing at my arms, face and legs just drawing blood everywhere while people just passed on by. I didn't expect anyone to give a crap honestly as to what was going on in my car but I in a way hoped at least one person would have stopped to ask if I was ok you know? No nobody ever does. My face is torn up pretty badly I have huge marks running down both cheeks and several marks by my eyes and a few good ones on my left arm. They sting but I'm alright.
I ended up driving to walmart down the road after being stranded in the parking lot for 2 hours. I drove with the glasses hanging off my face and did the best I could. I bought a loaf of bread and used the wire in the little tie to fix my glasses. I'm always quite destitute financially and this is the best I can do unfortunately. Everyone makes fun of my glasses anyway. I got them back in 2014 and I do need new ones as the lenses are scratched to hell but what can I do. Life has been very hard for me these past 2 years. I'm living in literal hell stuck in a job I hate with a slim chance of any betterment.
Ah yes isn't untreated mental health and disorders fun?
At least my crappy repair job is holding.

So I have gotten a lot of DMs about how I got my score and I thought that I should just create a post about how I studied and some general tips. For the record I scored a 523 on the 4/14 exam (131, 128, 132, 132) and I studied for around 3 months with school, research and EMS work on the side.

I think I am gonna start with some general tips that I think are often overlooked.

GET YOUR SLEEP AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. I cannot overstate how important this is. The difference between a good nights rest and a poor nights rest is insane. I was seeing a 5 point difference on practice exams when I was well slept vs poorly slept. Taking care of yourself is super important. You cannot learn effectively without good sleep and taking care of yourself. Eat well, sleep well, exercise, cut out that drinking and smoking etc...
FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. Another thing that I think is super important. We all learn differently and we each need to find what works for ourselves. The reality is that the MCAT is about your willingness to commit yourself to the exam for a few months and not really about your out and out intelligence. If someone is recommending a certain study plan and you find it hard to keep up with or are having a hard time learning, it is not the best plan for you. Consistency is key and if you cannot keep your routine up consistently it is not the right plan for you. Try different things, try different study places, different strategies for CARS etc.. Fuck around and find out ya get me?
Don't beat yourself up. Your mental is super important. If you feel like you're doomed you probably are. Don't compare yourself to others and don't get bothered about not getting things right the first try or not scoring what you want to score. None of us are perfect and its ok to struggle from time to time. This goes back to taking care of yourself. I am not gonna lie, this subreddit can be really bad for your mental health after seeing all the high scorers and high achievers. It is better to make mistakes now than on the actual exam. This exam is not the end all be all and even if you do not do well, there is always more opportunities. You are only lost when you admit you are lost. Comparison is the thief of joy and while this exam is not joyful at all, you should still do your best to make it as bearable as possible. If you are struggling with your mental health (I know I was), there are people who are there for you and there are resources out there. Love yourself first and foremost.
Don't get tilted on the real deal. I got tilted on my CARS section of my exam and had to rush through to just complete it. Looking back, this was a huge mistake. If you do not know, just take your best guess and keep on moving. What is done is done and there is always redemption on the next question.
IDK if this is universal but I keep in mind that when the AAMC makes these questions, they expect a decent portion to get most questions correct. So there will be an answer that basically most people will be able to understand the logic behind and get correct. Most premeds (myself included) have the IQ of a snail w severe CTE so the AAMC will generally have logic that is 1 or 2 step at the most. If you have a tossup on the answers, think about which requires less of a logical leap and honestly like 80% of the time ur gonna be right on the money.

Anyway, here is how I studied.
I was studying around 3 hours a day.
Content review with kaplan books and KA for ps (I watched all the videos and took notes but this takes a long time. I had not prior PS knowledge going in and the KA stuff is gold). Looking back, the KA content is some of the best out there and should not be slept on.
Any topic that I was having trouble on I reviewed the KA videos or searched up topic + "mcat" on youtube and there are usually some really good videos out there.
I started milesdown anki as soon as I began studying and was doing around 80 new cards a day. Anything I thought was hard or anything I was iffy on, i created my own cards and sometimes would scribble down notes on a piece of a paper or my own index card to get it in my own head a little better.
Once content review was done:
3/4 cars passages a day (should have started this earlier), 120 questions on UGANDA a day w 1 practice exam a week w/ a day for review anything i was iffy on, i made more anki cards specifically for that topic. get content review done ASAP and get to questions. DW about your UGANDA score, it's tough and its meant to be like that.
Get the AAMC content done if you can. This is gold although their explanations are often "this is right because it is right, this is wrong because it is wrong".
Any practice exam that is not AAMC is garbage, the logic is bad and there is no reason to take them IMO. I took like 2 TPR exams and it was basically a completely different exam to the real thing with completely different logic.

I’m dealing with an odd situation right now and I’m feeling directly responsible for it. TL;DR at the end!
One month ago this guy (32) hit me up (30) on Grindr and after 5 days of chatting, on a Saturday evening I gave in and we went out for a beer. We said we were up for chatting and maybe a bit of kissing only. But damn. We stayed up together in the bar till 3 a.m. just talking, laughing, touching and teasing each other. The fucking magnetism! I felt so stupid and regretful not meeting earlier (if only I had known what was going to happen a day later). Now I wonder if this dude felt it too. In my life, I felt this way with my ex only, no one else. Then we went for a walk, back to my car… and we almost fucked in there, but thank God I had the urge to stop! He asked to see me again at the end, not to hook up but to drink, go to the gym or any other activities if I wanted, as he said he enjoyed the evening we spent together.
When I got back home, he wrote me a message asking me if I got home safely, then he gave me his phone number.
One day later he hit me up again both on Grindr and on my phone, just casually chatting, but I never responded to his last message because all of this shit happened in the course of an evening:

My boss notified that our company was going to be shut down and I was going to be jobless in a month;
My grandpa passed away unexpectedly.
My half-brother had a car accident. Luckily he was - and is - ok, but he had to remain 2 weeks at the hospital.
Moreover, I was going to start studying (and still am) for the final and most important exam at my University.

I’ve basically spent the entire past month processing what the fuck happened! I know it might sound stupid, but no matter how good the evening was, I just needed to completely focus on myself, so I immediately deleted Grindr and honestly, although my thoughts gravitated there, I could not bring myself to write to him… I was too much out of myself to meet him - nor anyone else - with serendipity…
Basically, I ghosted him I suppose.
He didn’t write to me during this month either though.
Now, a month later, I’m doing way better and last evening I decided to hit him up with a “hi, how are you doing?”.
He read it immediately. Aaaand, the foreseeable rest of the story is: he read it, two blue ticks and hasn’t answered. :)
I had already taken into account such an outcome, however it still hurt a bit… mainly because I TERRIBLY felt in the wrong here.
However, am I really to be blamed completely because I needed time to sort things out? He doesn’t know anything about what happened to me, nor do I know why he didn’t responded to me yesterday or in the past month. If it’s true that we don’t give anyone else explanations - especially to strangers - why do I feel the need to do so, here?
The act of him “ghosting me” might have happened eventually even if I hadn’t disappeared for a month, of course, as we know how life goes… however, I’m wondering if my actions took a part in the course of the events?
He might gonna answer in a day or two, but I highly doubt it. I will surely move on but I’m already regretting the wasted potential of the connection.
What do you think of the situation ? Would you even answer to someone after one month of disappearance? I’m ready for raw and honest reviews because I know I could have managed things better… but I was overwhelmed by everything. I’m sorry.
TL;DR: had a great evening with a guy willing to stay in touch but then a day later my life got messed up and I felt the need to have time for myself for a month. I unwillingly ghosted him. One month later, I hit him up, he left me on read and still hasn’t answered back.

Hi everyone this will be a many part series on how I got a 524 after 4 years of university and a gap year - I've received many a PM and wanted to mass-send out a guide bc I can't give quality advice just typing!
In my last 3 years of college, I TA’d for organic chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and general physics among other random classes. I've also tutored some people w/ MCAT q's now and have noticed some patterns that I just wanted to offer some advice on. I believe almost everyone can excel on this exam but recognize we have different access to resources like time, money, different priorities/goals, different limits and barriers.
Onto the post:
Most Common Mistakes and How to Avoid:
1) If you are in college, studying only to do well for an exam
many students have told me they studied in college to take a test and now struggle in spite of content review with flashcards, review books, etc.
This is not always a students’ fault, sometimes and esp if you were doing covid learning it was really hard not to do this. However we should all take responsibility for how we study as much as we can!
In freshman year, orgo, I would study 3-4 days before the test by rewriting all the notes, doing a few practice problems, and would stay up until like 5-9am on the morning of my test studying. It was really terrible for me and my health/mental wellbeing.
Solution:
Figure out what works for me and implement it early on.
What I figured out quickly was that my note taking strategy was absolute shit to be honest, and only worked well for my more memorization heavy classes.
What I did was write down what was and wasn’t working for biology/biochemistry/psychology (memorization classes) - what I wish I did now was spaced repetition with flashcards.
Physics and chem? Different story. I did terrible in high school AP physics but absolutely crushed college physics because I realized my study habits in high school were all wrong! In high school I relied on note taking and equations, and in college I only read textbook summaries (and googled or YouTube details), did the necessary flipitphysics that was assigned, and then for each chapter would hammer out probably what totaled to be 50-100 practice questions prior to each exam, which would cover maybe 3 chapters. I would go to office hours all the time to go over questions I didn’t understand.
Ask your professors what they think is the best way to study, go to office hours.
I like to ask myself: is this like a driving test, where it’s not enough to just know the traffic rules and I need to actually practice driving? Or is this just a knowledge test, where all I need is to regurgitate information? Most classes and exams are a mix, the MCAT is most definitely more the former.
2) Passive studying, saving practice exams and problems for later
Ok me going over this is like beating a dead horse. You need to study actively as in doing practice problems, doing spaced repetition, things that make you think. Reading, listening, and rewriting notes are super passive because you could easily not absorb anything at all but still accomplish the physical task of getting through content which is not enough!
Even listening to videos and making flashcards and reviewing those cards I would consider to be passive if you are not actively thinking through each card or connecting it to different pieces of information
Moreover, a lot of students fall into this trap of fearing practice problems because they feel like they don’t know enough information yet. I started practice exams week 4 of content review ( no regrets) and I wish I started practice problems UEarth at the same time!
Solution
When you’re practicing flashcards and you come across a card that’s difficult for you, don’t just try to recall it, find out the answer, then move on hoping you’ll remember it for next time. If you struggle to remember something after a few attempts the same day, go back and remind yourself of the “story” of how that information comes to be. For example, if you card said “does the umbilical vein carry oxygenated or deoxy blood” and you just can’t remember, you have to go over the concept. The mom body has to bring oxygenated blood to the fetus’ heart to be pumped to the fetus’ body, and we know veins bring blood to the heart, so the umbilical vein carries oxygenated blood. There’s a “story” behind every piece of information.
Practice problems! Anything that asks you questions that rely on knowledge and facts but in a way that you have to twist relationships and information and apply it. Problems help tell the story behind content, and you will quickly find out that memorization and knowledge are not enough. Start these early. You do not have to be at 100% confidence. Even being at 50% is enough for practice problems to start being helpful in guiding your study plan. Ya know, eat the frog.
The MCAT is a critical thinking and application test and discrete questions do not pop up that frequently. When they say the test is a mile wide and an inch deep but you take it and it feels super detailed, it’s typically because the details they test you on are variations on simple concepts but these small variations can psych people out or trip you up if you didn't do active practice with manipulating relationships, applying information etc.
3) Not being interested at all in what you’re learning
look I hate studying for a test as much as the next person but we are trying to minimize suffering here.
Please evaluate whether you hate something because it’s hard for you or because you genuinely think it’s just plain uninteresting to you. They “like” a certain topic in bio, they “dislike” a certain topic in chem, and I just want you to ask yourself, do you hate the struggle or do you hate the information?
That being said, the solution is easy.
Solution: Stay curious
Curiosity gives us things to be joyful about, to look forward to. If you absolutely hate fluid dynamics (my sour grapes because it took me so long to get), try to connect it to a topic that you find interesting, or that matters to you. Mine was hypertension, blood pressure cuffs, and airplanes because who doesn’t think airplanes is cool?
For CARS, get in the habit of feigning interest and eventually you may find yourself being amused by the passages. This was true for me, and especially true on the psych/soc portion of my own exam. I would jot down names or topics that I wanted to learn more about. I started to read more philosophy on my own time, to wonder about the world, and all of a sudden these long ass passages felt more approachable, more relevant to me, even if they were about some obscure photographer that I will never meet or remember the name of.
If you come and tell me physics isn’t cool, we’ll have problems. Physics is hard, and I struggled the first time around in high school so much that I got a C- and that was with my teacher being nice to me. However I can no longer deny its usefulness, its relevance, and frankly I cannot deny how awesome it is to have a branch of science we fall back to if we trace our own biology back as far as we can go.
4) Not setting and moving goals/strategies - This one I will jump straight to the general solution
If you are studying the same way after 3 months and making no progress but you keep chugging along, chapter by chapter, I got news for you. Something you are doing is not working well at all for you and you need to change how you study. If months of flashcards go by and you’re still getting a 490 on your exam, you’re not absorbing the information. Instead, try doing practice problems after the chapter and googling/youtubing videos of questions you get wrong. Maybe you need to make your own deck. Maybe you need to switch decks.
If you set a goal of 520 on FLs and you’re blowing those out of the water, raise your goal and set a higher standard for yourself, review those FLs with even greater precision.
If you set a goal of 520 and you’re scoring well below that, evaluate the time you have, whether you want to push it back, or if there’s a score that’s lower that you’d still be happy with. Read over others’ study techniques and see if there’s something you are missing.
Set goals for every few weeks of where you want to be on the MCAT. At those milestones, evaluate if you need to move your goalpost or if you need to push back the test.
5) Not taking breaks
So many of us have a habit of grinding and grinding away in an attempt to do super well. This was me in the first two years of college and I absolutely sacrificed my health, both physical and mental for it and I’m still paying the price years later. Burnout and suffering is real, and this process does not need you to sacrifice everything you love for it.
My friend from college once told me that if you don’t choose when to take a break your body will choose for you.
Solution
Every week take a day of half day where you just shut your brain off. I don’t care if that’s mindlessly scrolling through reddit, bingeing a show, going for a run, going out for drinks, whatever you want. Just take a day to be someone who is not studying for the MCAT.
We are aiming to compartmentalize this test to take up only a small portion of our brain.
Set schedules, for example, if you’re full time only study 9-5 or 10-5. If you’re a student or working full time, maybe this looks like spreading out your studying over a longer period of time and sequestering it to 6-8am or 6-8pm and 10-5pm on weekends with Fridays off. It really helps to have a schedule and to build in open days/flexibility into said schedule.
Give yourself flexibility to say no to studying for a day or even three if you need. It’s much better to not study at all for a day or two and come back with full focus, than to study at 25% efficiency and focus even when you’re tired.
Thursday nights before my FLs and my real test, I sometimes studied until my usually 6pm and sometimes cut my studying to be done at 11am because I just did not want to be too tired the next day. No mental fatigue for me, and I felt sharp on every test day (except I got up to pee in the middle of c/p during my real test bc I did not realize how much coffee I had LOL)
6) Trying to “shortcut” your way through content knowledge instead of being precise and detail-oriented
A lot of students I have give me lukewarm definitions of key terms in each topic. While it’s more than okay to not know everything in great detail, you have to be able to at least define something in simple terms. My structural biology professor once said “if you can’t explain something in simple words, you don’t know it well enough.” People will also sometimes give “shortcut” definitions, where they might say “oh, well this has an OH so that makes it polar” when the “this” they are referring to is fully a lipid.
Here’s an example: I ask you to define what something is. If your definitions includes anything like “it kinda is….” “it sorta is….” “I think that it’s basically….”, you don’t have a precise enough definition or understanding. I’m not saying you need to be able to explain why something works (like wtf IS gravity, right? *hits bong*), but you need a precise definition of what something is to begin understanding the why.
I probably don’t know physics any better than the next person, I definitely do not know biology any better than the next bio major. However, when you study, precision matters to get those points.
Solution: Ask why and make connections
Be the annoying 5 year old that asks “why?” fifty billion times.
For example, yeah we know that we can shine 260nm light to find a [ ] of nucleic acids. Ok, you say, it’s because DNA can absorb light, and more DNA absorbs more of that light, that’s Beer’s Law. Then I would challenge you to ask, well why DNA absorb light in the first place? Why does DNA absorb different wavelengths of light than, say, tryptophan? Why does conjugation or even the hydrophobicity of something’s environment change its absorption of certain wavelengths of light? Yes you will fall into a rabbit hole on things that are way out of the scope of the MCAT and eventually you will not be able to answer “why” at all, but that’s ok. The goal isn’t to pencil the line right in between physics and philosophy, which let’s be real, that’s what most stuff comes down to. The goal is to challenge yourself to connect an idea with them most basic scientific principles that you had to learn.
For example, the example of spectroscopy requires you to pull on (very) basics of quantum, electron orbital theory, energy, etc. It’s in making these connections and asking why that you will more easily and more quickly make those connections on the MCAT.
Even in doing flashcard reviews I challenged myself to do this. If I was hit with a card about the FA synthesis pathway, I would picture the pathway in my head but also draw out in my brain’s whiteboard how the products like malonyl coa influence the other pathways. Basically, just making connections.
7) Making the MCAT your whole life
Lastly, many students lose themselves in this whole premed and mcat process which makes them both miserable/burnt out and also kind of intolerable to be around.
Like you really don’t wanna be that person in your class, no matter how well you’re doing, who can’t hold a conversation without mentioning how you are pre-med and or studying for the mcat.
You also really don’t wanna be the person (me) that was so neurotic in their years of college that they feared that even one thing falling through means that life is over. I quickly regretted the type of anxiety I held in relation to this track before I came to the conclusion that this is just another career, and that I will live a fulfilling life regardless of where my career takes me.
My solution:
Set goals beyond the MCAT. Mine was to run a half marathon before October. Yesterday, I just ran my first 10k.
Other goals I set: plan my wedding and reception. Don’t kill any of my plants and find a white knight philo that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg (will tutor for cuttings). Learn to bake a cake and macarons with full shells. Shadow a few doctors. Bring my cholesterol down.
Basically, see your life as something that will go on no matter how you do on the MCAT, and that life will continue to pass as you study, so don’t give this exam, which is much smaller in the grand scheme of your life, more of your time than it deserves.
That wraps up this first part, hope it was helpful! I’m thinking of making this into a video series on YT because I like to hear myself talk and I hate typing(typical millenial/genz narcissism? probably) and I also just need to get tf off of Reddit now that I’m done with my MCAT. My new goal is to minimize my social media usage (HAH), but have not successfully found a way to achieve this goal yet.

I ordered from a seller that had mainly positive reviews and I received an item that was gross (various brown stains and a lot of hair on it). I feel so disappointed and deceived.
Why would they do something like that? Is it that hard to clean the item before shipping? :(

I noticed somebody else posted a review for this vendor on this sub so thought I might as well post mine here too. I’ve ordered many times from this vendor because of their consistently fast shipping times, response rates, and reasonable prices. Their FXE is the most affordable I’ve seen on the market but always very pure. Probably the best U.S. domestic vendor lately in terms of speed and consistency in my opinion.
