2023.05.27 11:31 --Flyboy-- Am I on the right path to finding the final pressure and temperature of an ideal gas in a spinning body?
![]() | I'm facing a fascinating challenge that requires some thermodynamic calculations related to a continuous flow centrifuge <https://www.news-medical.net/whitepape20160926/Overview-of-Continuous-Flow-Centrifugation.aspx>. Before diving into the design and construction process, I need to determine the required radius and rate of spin to achieve specific target pressures and temperatures. While I have good building skills, my expertise in thermodynamics is limited. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate your assistance in working out the necessary formulas for this problem. submitted by --Flyboy-- to thermodynamics [link] [comments] The objective at hand is to find the pressure and temperature at the final point [f], given the initial state. Let me provide you with the details of the apparatus and the parameters involved. Simplified CV Overview The apparatus involves the following elements: The centrifuge operates with one kilogram per second of air entering at the initial point [i]. It has an initial temperature of 293K and a pressure of 100,000Pa. The centrifuge spins around an axis at a rate of 10.47 rad/s (equivalent to 100 RPM). The distance between the axis and the center of the intake at point [i] is 0.2 meters, while the distance between the axis and point [f] is 1.0 meter. Beyond point [f], there is an expansion valve that limits the flow rate to 1 kilogram per second. To simplify the calculations, I made the assumptions that we are using an ideal gas, that the process is adiabatic, the system is in a steady state, and the system is isentropic. Given the parameters involved, we need to solve for the final pressure and temperature at point [f]. I came up with the following formulas: T_f = ((r^2 * ω^2) / (m_dot * Cp)) + T_i P_f = P_i * Exp[((M * ω^2) / (2 * R * T)) * r^2] Link to my work to get these formulas: https://drive.google.com/file/d/14dHSkYpx_YcbAuElYpRlo6nYEgYqoYqS/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/16YEzYRdz6PsC3oOoKfV2EOHeC9ylFAFc/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LUGWLEYF3jBxETB4xwqpZ-oc4k72FA4_/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TNgqXYGjxgf2bf2Gpb-c5FgAawKTCLGB/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UPd5hiUvlNhuTHtK087Sg_js_E2VzHKQ/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VRonMMTbC6Wxu6qYT7k0sv73P1-XZP4D/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZD99-ROpnOmCbVuaKSnmcEemDI4iMDWS/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oClBu_59sAkOI2ExZVAL5owsGFLek6oW/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xIcpEjhPU4BVbw9_hEaOZhlF0PXb02uQ/view?usp=sharing, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1z-dvBwMi_x2mJJ_CEDYGEKM6ZWFeaYRd/view?usp=sharing While I have tinkered with these formulas, I'm unsure if my approach is correct as it did not pass my gut-feeling test as the results do not look right at high rates of spin (>10,000 RPM). Your expertise and insights would be invaluable in tackling this problem effectively. I apologize if this post resembles a homework problem, as it was not my intention. I genuinely seek guidance for a real-world centrifuge application and am feeling way out of my depth. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide! Edit: It was mentioned that the apparatus description was not clear. I hope this clarification helps. To simplify the setup, imagine a spinning disk with a pipe attached, resembling a spoke of a wheel. Air enters the pipe near the axle and moves through it, gradually increasing in pressure until it reaches the final point of interest, which is the farthest from the axle. Finally, the end of the pipe is equipped with an expansion valve that regulates the flow rate through the pipe to a predetermined level. |

_______________ *1 De Grey has reported that its Hemi deposit at the Mallina Gold Project is comprised of Measured Mineral Resources of 4.7 Mt @ 1.7 g/t Au for 265 koz Au, Indicated Mineral Resources of 153.4 Mt @ 1.3 g/t Au for 6,590 koz Au, and Inferred Mineral Resources of 92.6 Mt @ 1.3 g/t Au for 3,779 koz Au, as those categories are defined in the JORC Code (as defined in National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects). Refer to De Grey’s public disclosure record for further details. No assurance can be given that a similar or any mineral resource estimate will be determined at Novo’s Becher Project. 2 Refer to the Company’s news release dated March 6, 2023 .* VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 23, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Novo Resources Corp. ( “Novo” or the “Company” ) (TSX: NVO, NVO.WT & NVO.WT.A) (OTCQX: NSRPF) is pleased to report continued outstanding results from the 2023 AC drilling program at Becher. Results referred to in this news release are not necessarily representative of mineralisation throughout the Egina Gold Camp. The Becher Project is located in the northern section of the Egina Gold Camp 28 km along trend from De Grey Mining Limited’s (“ De Grey ”) 10.6 Moz Au (JORC 2012) 1 Mallina Gold Project. Novo commenced its 2023 AC program at Becher in mid-April 2023 and has already received gold results for 3,350 (including QAQC) samples of priority drilling, facilitated by a fast-tracked field sampling methodology and Chrysos™ PhotonAssay analysis, currently achieving an assay turnaround time of 5 – 12 days. Figure 1 - Egina Gold Camp tenure showing the Becher and Nunyerry North Projects and the priority Becher prospects. Figure 1 - Egina Gold Camp tenure showing the Becher and Nunyerry North Projects and the priority Becher prospects is available at https://www.globenewswire.com/NewsRoom/AttachmentNg/3420ef5e-1f0b-4e46-b8c5-ba12502c4544 . Background The Becher Project covers an area approximately 20 sq km in the north of the 100% Novo owned E47/3673 exploration tenement. The area is characterised by shallow cover overlaying the highly prospective and under-explored Mallina Basin. Becher is situated adjacent to De Grey’s 10.6 Moz Au (JORC 2012) 1 Mallina Gold Project and 2.5 km south of their Withnell South discovery 3 ( Figure 1 ). During 2022, over 32,000 m of drilling was conducted by Novo on broad regional lines (640 m line spacing), focused on ENE trending gold-fertile, structurally complex corridors at Becher and successfully delineated three standout gold and associated pathfinder element targets at Irvine, Heckmair and Whillans. Analysis of multielement geochemistry from bottom-of-hole samples also identified prospective hornblende-diorite intrusions within and around the targeted structural corridors. These intrusions are commonly associated with gold deposits in the Mallina Basin. The current 20,000 m AC program is testing multiple, high-priority structural and intrusion-hosted gold targets generated from the 2022 programs, delineated in well-defined and highly anomalous structural corridors. Drilling is being completed at high-priority drill prospects at Heckmair, Irvine and Whillans following significant gold and pathfinder anomalies and “sanukitoid” intrusion-related signatures in the 2022 AC bottom-of-hole drill hole samples. The current drilling program is on schedule for completion by the end of Q2 2023. _______________ 3 While certain aspects of Becher mineralisation seem analogous to that at the Mallina Gold Project as disclosed by De Grey’s Mallina Gold Project, mineralisation is not necessarily representative of mineralisation throughout the Becher Area or the Egina Gold Camp. Drilling and Results To date, 423 holes for a total of 10,080 m AC drilling have been completed over the eastern Heckmair and Irvine prospects ( Figure 2 ), with standout gold assay results returned in the first 349 holes. New results show high potential for mineralisation hosted both within the large Heckmair hornblende-diorite intrusion, along and in proximity to large cross-cutting and offset structures and at the margins of the intrusion where they are in contact with the Constantine Sandstone country rocks, all under shallow cover. Results from the current AC program are located on 320 m lines across the Heckmair prospect and infill the previous 640 m drilling completed during the 2022 program. In addition, an east-west traverse was conducted across both the western and eastern faulted blocks of the Heckmair intrusion, intersecting anomalous gold mineralisation within a demagnetised portion of the intrusion ( Figure 2 and Figure 3 ). Additional infill lines at Irvine are spaced as closely as 160 m in some areas. Significant intercepts (> 2 g*m in tenor) include:
Two AC cross-sections examples are shown from the Heckmair intrusion Figure 5 and the Irvine Shear corridor Figure 5 below. Figure 4 shows a significant zone of pervasive sericite altered and quartz veined intrusion identified in F1498 in the northern portion of the western Heckmair block, with an intercept of 12 m @ 0.28 g/t Au from 6 m, including 6 m @ 0.42 g/t Au from 9 m. The intrusion is characteristic of the medium to coarse grained hornblende-diorite intercepted in other holes within the Heckmair prospect. An intercept of 3 m @ 5.23 g/t Au from 9 m in F1474 was associated with quartz veining hosted within the Heckmair intrusive in proximity to the southern contact with the Constantine Sandstone country sediments. Anomalous mineralisation occurs both within the sediments to the south and within the intrusion to the north. An intercept of 9 m @0.77 g/t Au from 9 m including 3m @ 2.05 g/t Au was identified in F1631 and is associated with quartz veining and shearing within the Constantine Sandstone country rocks ( Figure 5 ). F1631 is located at the boundary of the Irvine and Heckmair prospects, with the inferred contact of the intrusion with the sediments approximately 36m to the north-west of the hole collar. Refer to Table 1 in the Appendix below for a complete list of assay results. True widths from AC drilling cannot be estimated at this time. Analytical methodology One-metre samples are collected from the drill rig and placed on the ground in piles for geological quantitative and qualitative logging. These piles are then speared at three-meter composites into a 500-gram Chrysos™ PhotonAssay jar. Some of the end of hole intervals are shorter than three meters depending on final hole depths. Jars are dispatched weekly to Intertek Genalysis (“ Intertek ”) in Perth, Western Australia and analysed for gold using Chrysos™ PhotonAssay (PHXAU01). QAQC procedures for the program include insertion of a certified blank approximately every 25 samples (4 per hundred), a Chrysos™ PhotonAssay certified standard approximately every 50 samples (2 per 100) and duplicate sampling (split of 3 m composite) at the rate of 4 per hundred. In addition, Intertek inserts Chrysos™ PhotonAssay certified standards at the rate of 2 per hundred. 2023.05.21 21:04 Weird-but-sweet Bib-front Regency gown, part 2: patterning the sleeves (it was nightmarish)
![]() | First and foremost, I want to say something: I absolutely, completely, wholly hate sleeves. Why do they even exist? Who invented sleeves? That was a bad move. submitted by Weird-but-sweet to HistoricalCostuming [link] [comments] After this introduction, let's go into the subject of sleeves for my Regency gown. (For those who don't know, I'm sewing a bib-front Regency gown, doing the pattern from scratch) I've been working on the pattern since Thursday. I spent at least 25 hours on them, and the pattern is still not perfect. But I'll finish it when I'll arrive at the sleeve step while sewing. Sooo let's go into the process, it'll be fun! https://preview.redd.it/dahz0cg3981b1.jpg?width=3096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c29e84ec85a1ff43c06352123528fd73ffbf041 It started very innocently on Thursday. I had a few measurements taken. I did a first mock-up for the base sleeve, and it went great. Then a second one to add puff. It was a bit too small in length, so I took note of it and I stopped because I was tired (it was around 2 am). The second fabric mock-up :D Colours! Colours and drawings all the way! Before stopping, I also made a plan for the next day... Oh my, was I optimistic. The next day, I did two more mock-ups. One was way too long. The other was ok, so I sewed it to the bodice mock-up... and discovered that I could NOT raise my arm. Like, at all. Impossible. Yipee. Next day, same issue. I tried to add a gusset. No good or destroyed the look. I gave up once more around 1 am. Finally, yesterday, I adjusted the sleeve pattern AND the bodice pattern. Three times. And finally, FINALLY I ended up with a sleeve pattern that 1) fit on my arm 2) fit with the bodice shape (the arm holes go very far in the back) 3) let me raise my arm. I need to shorten it a little and add a band around the arm, but those are details, now that my bodice pattern is validated. Here are a few of my fabric mock-ups. The last two are sewed to the bodice mock-up The base sleeve pattern compared to the current sleeve pattern Oh and in case you don't really know how to change the sleeve pattern, you start with a base pattern that fit your arm, and from that you cut it into pieces, move them around, and draw a new pattern. (always keep track of the original order, you don't want to have to put them back together as a puzzle later) here is a small graph of the different pieces and how you use them to have a new pattern. I did this drawing to remember what I wanted to do, as I needed to stop and didn't adjust the same night (and now it's perfect to explain :D) Now that I have the sleeve pattern and the validated bodice pattern, I'm moving to the bib-front bodice. My notes for the rest of the pattern The construction of the bib-front bodice demanded a little brain power from me, but I'm pretty sure I know what I want now. A two-layer piece, the first one (outside), with a longer starting middle that will be gathered, and the second one (inner) will be the right size and shape right away, to fix the gather on. At the moment I'm writing this post, I am severely late on this project. I wanted to finish the gown's sewing before my sister's arrival on Wednesday. But I have an exam on Tuesday. And it is currently 9pm for me. I have approximately half an hour to put myself in my stays and pattern the bib-front, and then I won't be able to work on the gown for tonight anymore... I know the sewing won't be completely done by my sister's arrival, but the sewing in itself won't be very long, maybe something like 20 to 25 hours top? It was patterning everything that was way too long. |

![]() | Hi we bought this bungalow house and are now looking for ideas to reconfigure as the kitchen living is too small. The house has been extended in the past as seen in the blue. submitted by CurrentAd600 to houseplans [link] [comments] None of the walls are supporting and are timber stud with the exception of the wall between bed 2/3. We'd like to maximize the space before going down an extension route. There is ample space to extend to the front. Our intial thoughts were to knock and rebuild the garage/blue west side into a two storey and/or extend to the front on the east side. The conservatory and entrance are all glass porches and will be demolished. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. |
