2023.05.31 02:28 Snoop_Doggo Ubuntu loads for a couple seconds, crashes and goes into windows repair tools (dual boot, 2 SSDs)

Hey guys! So I put the SSD from my old laptop into my new one and am having some strange issues.
I used a bootable USB to install Ubuntu, which seems to work fine as far as I can tell. I tried repeating the process with a different USB in case and got the same results.
Upon my first time trying to open ubuntu after installing I can get as far as the login screen before it freezes, goes black and shifts to the windows repair tool. Then if I try to open ubuntu any time after this initial crash it will seem to load for a few seconds before crashing and opening windows, never getting as far as the login again.
That is unless I go to the ubuntu recovery mode and hit update GRUB, in which case my next time opening Ubuntu will work mostly normally. I can download things, connect to the internet, and everything saves properly. But the next time I try to get on it will crash at the login screen, then any time after that it will crash before the login screen and default back to windows. The only thing that's abnormal is I can't adjust the screen brightness for some reason
I noticed that whenever I update GRUB Ubuntu switches from being mounted to / to being mounted to this:
/vasnap/firefox/common/host-hunspell
But the partition specified in fstab is what it should be as / At this point I'm at a loss, I don't know why it does that but it seems to be the only way to get it to work for a session
Things I've tried:
*Double checking the boot order to make sure that Ubuntu is first, usbs are allowed, safe mode is off, all that jazz
*Reinstalling GRUB
*updating GRUB which seems like a temporary fix
*Using repair tools on GRUB
*A slew of terminal commands but there are so many I've lost track and couldn't list them all here
*Checking that my partitions are mounted
I can only assume the issue is that the mount point gets changed by the update so that it no longer matches the fstab file, but updating seems to be the only way to get it to work so I don't know how to fix this

2023.05.31 02:06 keepit-simple Plex Linux app not finding server anymore with recent updates

I have a Plex media server and client application installed on my Linux Mint machine. I'm using the flatpak release. If I update beyond the release from 2023-04-11 (Commit # 3b0529239f6fd2231c4eb8892db44e98d33dfb523ee188b394ee9fde57f7789a), the client app refuses to find the server that is located on the same machine. So right now, with every update that comes along, I try it and test that it will or won't find the server. Since Apr 11, all versions refuse to find it, so then I revert back to the Apr 11 release. Anyone else having this issue? I'd really like it to be fixed.

FAQ

If you're new here, make sure to read through the above. Secondly, any simple questions should be confined to this weekly announcement post. If you've found a bug or a new strategy, or wondering what type of playthrough to try, you should make a separate post about those.
There are two types of flairs: user flairs (which are currently customizable) and post flairs. If you make a post, make sure you're flairing it appropriately for others. There are some exclusive flairs you cannot pick but should be on the lookout for, such as:
Changelog - these posts have very informative posts regarding changes.
Fixed - these posts generally have a solution to a bug or problem.
Lastly, if you flair a post [Help Wanted] and someone answered satisfactorily, make sure to re-flair it with [Solved] so others can find the solution instead of looking through tons of posts.
Antivirus products are known to detect the launcher as a threat and block its execution or delete the launcher. The reason for this is uncertain, but most likely due to a launcher component, PyInstaller, that is commonly flagged as a threat by antivirus software. A sufficient workaround is to add the launcher binary to your antivirus' whitelist, or to select the action to trust this binary when detected. More information can be found from the launcher's FAQ on Github.
If you are paranoid, you can always inspect the source code yourself and build the launcher from the source code. However, you are still likely to get false positives.
If you think the UI isn't set up correctly, make sure to press } to access the UI Settings panel. You will be given a choice of several different styles, with "Labels" being the recommended setting for new players and "Classic" for veteran players.
Great! The modteam is always looking for feedback, please make a post about your purposed change or idea and let the community decide through voting and debate. If it's something that is a bit more sensitive, please send it through modmail.

2023.05.31 01:39 LemonAncient1950 Unable to change the owner/group of a file being copied into an EC2 instance?

I'm trying to deploy a bastion host with a single script example.sh in it. The bastion deploys fine and the example.sh copies in fine, but it's not executable and belongs to root instead of ssm-user.
I've tried setting the user and group setting in the init configuration. I've also tried adding chmod and chown commands manually using the addUserData function. Neither of these does anything. The deployment succeeds but nothing changes. I have been changing the logical id between deployments to ensure new instances are created each time.
Here's my code:
const bastion = new BastionHostLinux( fleetStack, `app-${env}-bastion-${fleetName}`, { instanceName: `app-${env}-bastion-${fleetName}-7`, vpc, init: CloudFormationInit.fromElements( InitFile.fromExistingAsset( "/home/ssm-useexample.sh", new Asset(fleetStack, `bastion-init-asset-${fleetName}`, { path: getRepoRoot("bastion", "example.sh"), }), { owner: "ssm-user", group: "ssm-user", } ) ), } ) Tags.of(bastion).add("isBastion", "true") Tags.of(bastion).add("fleet", fleetName) bastion.connections.allowToDefaultPort(rds.db) bastion.instance.addUserData( "sudo yum install -y postgresql", "sudo yum install -y jq", "sudo chown ssm-user:ssm-user /home/ssm-useexample.sh", "sudo chmod 755 /home/ssm-useexample.sh" )
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2023.05.31 01:30 sbehta Need Help with USB device in a VM

I am trying to get a USB device (Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5) attached to the host computer to show in a VM.
In my setup, I am running Ubuntu OS on the host computer and using VirtualBox to host a VM running a Debian based OS. I have installed the Extension Pack in VirtualBox. In the Ubuntu terminal window if I run the command USBLS, I can see the Aeotec stick listed under "Bus 002 Device 007: ID xxxxxxx" but the USB stick does show in the guest OS.
I also tried a USB memory stick, which is recognized in the host OS (Ubntu) but not in the VM.
I appreciate any help. Please let me know if more info is needed. Thx

Hi, I am currently running Ubuntu (multiple virtual machines) but it's becoming a lag. Unless there is some way to make it go faster like black and white screen or whatever. I only have two running and it's lagging already (odd as that sounds). I need to run 15+, but don't know how slow it will become.
What Linux would you all recommend to run that supports Chrome or Firefox?
One that is super fast... and super secure...

2023.05.31 00:54 automatepete High Res 16:10 monitors & scaling - Dell U3023E discussion

I'm looking for 16:10 monitor in the 27 - 32 inch size range.
Only decent option I'm seeing is the Dell U3023E which has a resolution of 2560x1600 (WQXGA) at 30 inches. Specs seem to make it an oddity in the monitor market.
  1. Anyone have any experience with this monitor or screen size/resolution combo under linux?
  2. How do icons/text look at native resolution?
  3. Are you using any pixel scaling?
  4. Any other comments?
Note: Don't really care about refresh rate or gaming performance. Running Ubuntu 2204/Gnome42.

2023.05.31 00:28 4ndre1- Review ROG STRIX X670E-A GAMING WIFI

Review ROG STRIX X670E-A GAMING WIFI
I am new to this one but I tried to highlight some key point of this motherboard
  • Tech Specs:
  • Chipset - AMD X670
  • Memory - 128GB, DDR5 6400+(OC)/ 6200(OC)/ 6000(OC) (which may be achieved only by using 2xDIMM)
  • Expansion Slots(CPU) - 1 x PCIe 5.0/4.0/3.0 x16 slot
  • Expansion Slots(Motherboard Chipset) - 1 x PCIe 4.0/3.0 x16 slot (supports x4 mode) 1 x PCIe 3.0 x1 slot
  • Ethernet - 1 x Intel® 2.5Gb Ethernet (Intel(R) Ethernet Controller (3) I225-V)
  • Wireless & Bluetooth - Bluetooth v5.2 & 2x2 Wi-Fi 6E (MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7922 (RZ616))
  • USB - Rear USB (Total 12 ports) & Front USB (Total 7 ports) (check the website for more details)
  • Audio - ROG SupremeFX 7.1 Surround Sound High Definition Audio CODEC ALC4080
    Pros:

  • Easy installation and maintenance: The motherboard has features such as PCIE® SLOT Q-RELEASE and M.2 Q-LATCH that make it easy to install and remove GPUs and SSDs. It also has a CLR CMOS button for simple BIOS resets and updates.

  • The ASUS ROG Strix X670E-E Gaming WiFi is an impressive motherboard. It has everything you'd need for a very capable AMD Ryzen 7000 PC build.18+2 Teamed Power Stages: The motherboard has a overkill power delivery system with 18+2 teamed power stages, each rated for 70A per stage. The VRM setup and power design allow for quite the punch through overclocking and even when running at stock settings, you'll not encounter any stability issues. Supporting the latest DDR5 RAM, we ran successful tests using DDR5-6400 kits.

  • Connectivity on the rear is also brilliant, thanks to the 7 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port and one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 port.

If you're searching for a mid-tier AM5 AMD motherboard, the ASUS ROG Strix X670E-A Gaming WiFi is a solid pick.

Cons:
  • The complete lack of "Network Connectivity" during OS installation both with Linux and Windows operating systems. This made installations far more difficult then it needed to be("Checked how to install windows without internet connection"). Once the OS's were installed and Network Drivers installed after Armory Create was installed, things worked well, but expected a smoother experience.

  • The motherboard has several features designed to make it easy ("Asus statement") for DIY builders to work with, such as Q-LEDs("but to be fair for this price I was expecting a Debug LED Displays") for quick diagnosis of problems and BIOS FlashBack™ for easy BIOS updates. A cool design on the back of the motherboard when you unbox it (Black hole) which is not visible when it's installed

(Black hole)
  • Getting Amory Create which attaches itself to your OS so from the board even if you are not connected to the internet it will start to install the software which from one hand give you access to the internet because without it you're screwed (basically no internet and you need a flash drive to install the drivers for the LAN)

2023.05.31 00:16 Consistent_Worry_714 Question about Pyg 6b and updating local frontends

So I set up kobald + silly tavern locally with the 4bit version of pyg 6b about a month ago and things work great! But I had a few questions.
Do I need to manually update kobald and silly tavern? If so I'm probably way behind on updates
Is pygmalion-6b-v3-ggml-ggjt-q4_0 the best version of pyg 6b 4bit to use? Or has a bettenewer 6b 4bit been released?

Edit: figured it out ;)
How to Update SillyTavern

This is not an installation guide. If you need installation instructions, look here:
https://docs.alpindale.dev/pygmalion-extras/sillytavern/#installation

This guide assumes you have already installed SillyTavern once, and know how to run it on your OS.

Linux/Termux:

You definitely installed via git, so just 'git pull' inside the SillyTavern directory.

Windows/MacOS:

Method 1 - GIT

We always recommend users install using 'git'. Here's why:

When you have installed via `git clone`, all you have to do to update is type `git pull` in a command line in the ST folder.
You can also try running the 'UpdateAndStart.bat' file, which will almost do the same thing. (Windows only)
Alternatively, if the command prompt gives you problems (and you have GitHub Desktop installed), you can use the 'Repository' menu and select 'Pull'.
The updates are applied automatically and safely.

Method 2 - ZIP

If you insist on installing via a zip, here is the tedious process for doing the update:

  1. Download the new release zip.
  2. Unzip it into a folder OUTSIDE of your current ST installation.
  3. Do the usual setup procedure for your OS to install the NodeJS requirements.

  1. Copy the following files/folders as necessary(*) from your old ST installation:

- Backgrounds
- Characters
- Chats
- Groups
- Group chats
- KoboldAI Settings
- NovelAI Settings
- OpenAI Settings
- TextGen Settings (textgen = ooba)
- Themes
- User Avatars
- Worlds
- settings.json

(*) 'As necessary' = "If you made any custom content related to those folders".
None of the folders are mandatory, so only copy what you need.

**NB: DO NOT COPY THE ENTIRE /PUBLIC/ FOLDER.**
Doing so could break the new install and prevent new features from being present.

  1. Paste those items into the /Public/ folder of the new install.

  1. Start SillyTavern once again with the method appropriate to your OS, and pray you got it right.

  1. If everything shows up, you can safely delete the old ST folder.

2023.05.31 00:10 guy_named_dude Can't reinstall/remove Windows 10

Hello, I'm having trouble with my Windows 10 install on an SSD. I started getting BSODs, then I checked Task Manager and it showed SSD usage at 100%. I ran a health check on all components (RAM, SSD, HDD) and all of them were in good condition (the PC is 2 years old, never had a problem). So, I tried to do a reinstall from settings -> recovery -> reset this pc, then I selected the option "erase everything from the SSD" to have a clean start, then it started the download, but in the middle of it BAM! BSOD! And the PC restarts again. I tried several times and it keeps happening. If I try to do anything else on Windows, it just runs very slow and eventually I get the BSOD, that's why I decided to install Linux.
Now I'm using the same PC but with Linux (installed on HDD), I tried formatting the SSD but it doesn't let me ("permission denied" or something). I just don't know what to do anymore. I don't care about losing data. What can I do? Just to be clear, I want to install Windows 10 on the SSD.
Thanks

2023.05.31 00:09 nmmbraz Hp Elite X2 1011 G1 + ChromeOS Flex

So to help someone who encounters the same problem I had yesterday when installing ChromeOS Flex on this HP. The error that kept occurring was the 3F0 error, indicating that there was no boot device. What I did, which solved my problem, was to use a live CD of Ubuntu and delete all the partitions, create a single partition in FAT32 format, and then change the BIOS settings to UEFI with CSM. I had several problems with Win10 running on it but it has been running ChromeOS smoothly!
