2023.05.31 01:13 PollyTLHist1849 The War of the Second Coalition: The Midterms of 1798 To Begin the World Again

Thomas Jefferson first saw his election as a blessing, a miracle. By 1798, he wished he were never cursed to election.
The Election of 1796.
Jefferson's Tenure
In 1797, Jefferson won the election for Chief Consul in a surprisingly hard-fought election. Now, using Arnold's legacy, he sought to undo what the Federalists had done. He started with the Tariff Act of 1797, reducing tariffs to record lows. As the deficit increased, he slashed the budget of the military, and did his best to undo a standing navy. American soldiers would be condemned to getting yellow fever on the frontier, and American ships would rot in ports.

Next, Jefferson went after the national bank. He was convinced that the bank was nothing but cronies, giving bribes to allies and taking money from honest Americans. Jefferson had enough. The Bank War began.
The Bank War
Jefferson sought to defeat the bank plaguing America. He faced considerable opposition from the Agrarians, who had waned after the Midnight Revolt. The Federalists, of course, were inconsolably enraged.
Jefferson sought to repeal the unconstitutional Bank Charter Act, the Agrarians and their cult-of-personality be damned. Of course, that was easier said than done. Jefferson's first plan was to get the Supreme Judiciary to "rule" against the bill. Jay would never do that. He later attempted to get the Secretary of the Treasury, Albert Gallatin, to simply refuse to manage the bank. No luck. He looked to Congress.
Federalists accused Jefferson's attempt to repeal the bank as anti-American.
In 1797, Jefferson tried to get the Bank Repeal Act through Congress. He assembled the coalition, and mobilized the Republican Party in a final war on the bank. However, thanks to Federalist-Agrarian cooperation, the Bank Repeal Act was struck down before it could reach Jefferson's office. As furious as the Virginian was, that would be the least of his worries in only a month.
A Real War on the Horizon
In 1797, former Chief Consul Thomas Paine was appointed ambassador to France, aboard the Anthony Beckett Clayborne. The ship vanished. Later that year, news emerged that it had been captured by the Royal Navy, Paine and a few other diplomats rotting in a prison. Jefferson couldn't believe what he was hearing.
Enraged, Jefferson sent a letter to Parliament, demanding that the prisoners be returned in exchange for the so-called "ABC Affair" being forgiven. The British, however, weren't willing to do that. They discovered that Paine was behind the so-called "Dublin Pamphlet", an anonymous pamphlet calling for revolution by the Irish against Britain. The Dublin Pamphlet was immensely successful, and Britain was bogged down in an uprising. They blamed Paine. Worse yet, the French were trapped in the War of the Second Coalition.
The War of the Second Coalition
In 1797, France was at war. Again. They had established several sister republics, and with the ABC Affair, it seemed that the United States may join France's crusade for liberty, equality, and fraternity.
As the British sent insults the way of America, it became increasingly clear that war was inevitable. As the Republicans cried for war, so too did Chief Consul Jefferson. In early 1798, war was declared.
The Solemn War begins.
Immediate Problems
Jefferson's cuts to the military and navy came back to haunt him. He had to mobilize an untrained, unequipped, and undersized army from nothing, while the Federalists had a field day hollering at their "idiocy". Jefferson believed he could turn it around.
He found a good strategy. John Paul Jones, Secretary of the Navy, had a good plan. The Americans wouldn't confront the British. Instead, they'd harass the British at sea, launching flares, and occasionally doing conflict. Just as soon as they arrived, they'd leave. This did two things. It wore the British down, and it bought America what it desperately needed: time. Time to build more ships, time to await French intervention. Unfortunately, it made for mediocre press coverage.
The Factions
The Federalists, after their humiliation in the Fraunces Tavern Conspiracy and their defeat in the ensuing election, saw their fortunes turn for the better. They hollered at the Republicans for their "mishandling of the war", and promised to turn it around with tariffs to fund the army and keep the navy floating.
However, some Federalists denounced this pro-war tone. They constituted the anti-war faction, demanding that America leave the foolish war altogether. They were endorsed by Alexander Hamilton, and led by Timothy Pickering.
The Republicans, on the other hand, were united in support of the war. Disunity came in the form of the Madison Tariff, a tariff drafted up by James Madison out of desperation for the disrepair of the army. This was quite the shift, and many opposed it.
The Agrarian Justice Party was increasingly dominated by the charismatic orator Aaron Burr. Burr had begun to idolize general Napoleon Bonaparte, a general responsible for countless victories and most of Italy. Burr's followers became known as the Wide-Awakes, and they generally simply supported Burr.
The opponents of Burr mobilized, establishing the Paine wing. They demanded that the party never fall to the ravings of a narcissistic, delusional megalomaniac, and instead establish itself as the vanguard of the poor and weary farmers of America.
America stands at a crossroads once again. Six factions contend, hoping to give their solution to the war. Many believe they can solve it, but only a few will be able to see their plan through. In this time...

2023.05.31 01:02 Riley-O-Reilly It's been a while since I've posted here regarding The Clockwork Army, sequel to The Cosigner. Things have gone a bit off the rails since then, but I'm still always keen for feedback.

The Clockwork Army is nearing what I feel to be the end of the second volume of this saga of sorts, though there are already nebulous plans for a third book. It's been a while since I posted an update on the subreddit, mostly because I felt it was becoming a bit tiresome to see me clogging up the Harmony feed with chapters.
However, I figured it was worth a shot to make one more appeal for feedback and other such engagement. While we're certainly far from the saga's roots as a fairly standard indy!Harry fic, The Clockwork Army has still been a blast to write and seems to have been fairly well received.
In any case, if you want to read a story in which Harry decides the day after his name comes out of the Triwizard Cup that he wants no part of this nonsense (and tells off a few professors along the way) only for things to go very much awry before we even reach Christmas, I would encourage you to read The Cosigner. Featuring what I consider no bashing (though canon events are called out), a Harry/Hermione relationship with a small bit of buildup, and a sort-of OC named Mafalda, The Cosigner was nothing more than my rather visceral reaction to the injustices heaped upon Harry all his life.
The sequel, The Clockwork Army, features Harry taking things international, getting himself wrapped up in a mystery along with a merry band of misfits, and generally going completely off the canon rails. It has been favorably compared to the Percy Jackson books and National Treasure, both of which are flattering parallels. With the third act currently in full swing in my word processor, I'd appreciate anyone willing to give what I've posted a read.

I've always kinda disliked the "sexy mafia dude/gal is all into you" cliche. I've always felt that criminals are either romanticized or demonized in fiction, like a slightly less creepy Madonna vs Whore complex. As somebody that grew up in an area with a lot of Ex-cons I wanted to make something more down to earth and explore what its like to be an ex-con a little bit ( I think I've just watched The Wire too much lol).
Also this city isn't based on any real place although I think its probably in the American rust belt somewhere. Its named after the city from Revolt of the Cockroach people

No, it's because you've got a massive crush on the former-criminal-turned-bartender who runs the place. You know she doesn't see you that way, but for now, you're happy just to spend time with her and listen to her stories. But today, you'll realize just how badly she's misunderstood your intentions.

You feel that south wind blowing up Saginaw Highway? All hot and dry and smelling like the smog that usually stays way down in the valley? That means it's gonna be a scorcher. So make sure you stay hydrated tomorrow.
Rough day eh? I suppose I can relate. I admire you for sticking it out though, for what it's worth I never could myself. I never took to working, and I paid for it.
I’m surprised you don't have anywhere better to be. What I wouldn't give to be your age again, all alone just before sunset in the dog days of summer. You sure there's no pretty girl out there, just waiting on you to show up at her door and ask if she’s too busy for a little dancing?

I spent a lot of time in a place just like this, trying to rub elbows with the people I looked up to.
I told you all the stories before, but what the hell, how about a refresher.
It took a while, but I got in and I was pretty good at it.

There was a time not too long ago where I ran this whole neighborhood. Ran the numbers game for a while, that was safe but the returns weren’t the millions I dreamed of so I moved on to more dangerous stuff.
Turned out I was good at that too. Too good. People got hurt. I need you to understand that.
I hurt people. A lot of people. More than I ever got punished for.
And it got me what I wanted. Power. Money. Respect. Fear.
It couldn't last though. You can never be on top all the time.
The sheriffs and the staties couldn't touch me, but I got sloppy with my money and the revenuers locked me up. That's typically how it goes.
I spent ten years in Terre Haute, eight behind bars and two working at the baking powder factory. When I got back to Tooner Flats everything I built was gone, all I had left was this building. I’d never even been inside before. I just used it to launder money.
You ever spend any time in a prison? I know you’re aware it's not a fun time, but you know what really kills you? It's not the gangs or the guards. It's the boredom.
Time slips away from you, but also seems to pass so slow that it's like trying to carve your name in dry cement.
You try to keep your feet on the ground, but you can't all the time.
You get up in the morning at 6, get counted at six fifteen, eat your oatmeal at six thirty, grab a full eight assembling office furniture for the feds. Two hours of rec time, outside if you’re really well behaved. Eat dinner, green Jello on fridays, red Jello every other day. Bed inspection. Choose between the library or the movie. Go to your bunk, lights out.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
I went mad for most of year four, came back around to something close to sanity in year six. I never really fully recovered though. I cant really complain I suppose, I deserved to be in there. A lot of people have been in there a lot longer for a lot less.

This is a brand of chips they had in the canteen out there in Indiana. You can't normally get this brand outside of prison. I picked up a few bags on ebay because every now and then I find myself craving it. They’re flavored with whatever flavor dust the day shift at the chip factory didn’t use up, so they’ve got a lot going on. Try a couple.

Kinda gross right? Wayyyy too much flavor and it all clashes weird. It's like licking the floor at Dollar general.
But believe me. They hit differently when you’re wearing orange and black.
When everything feels and looks the same day and day out, you start craving sensation. Any sensation. This absolute overload of flavor felt like heaven. The closest I ever saw to a riot was the saturday they opened the canteen without a fresh stock of these.
You go a little crazy in there. Just looking for anything to silence that steady drumbeat of monotony. I got really into the twilight books when they were coming out. I know somebody that spent a long time in solitary who spent their time touching cold metal, waiting for it to get warm, letting go and touching it again when it got cold again. Anything to break up the void.
When I look back at those two years where I was on top of the world, they weren't worth it. They weren't worth my time in Indiana. I don't want you to make the same mistakes I did.

He was a nurse, down at the VA clinic on Cleveland Boulevard. It’s closed now, I think they tore it down and built a Costco. Back when I was a kid it was still seen as emasculating for a man to take that job, but he was good at it and it paid enough for him to raise me on his own after mom died. I felt ashamed though.
He was a good honest man, and I spent my childhood ashamed of him. And then threw away everything he ever gave me to pursue life as a bigshot.
I tried to visit him the other day. He lives in a trailer park on the other side of old highway nine, way down in the valley now. I could see him in there, on his chair watching the hockey game.
He could see me. I knocked and we made eye contact, but he never stirred from his chair.
I suppose I’m dead to him,and I don't blame him. I just wish to god I wasn't.
